Some of the animated .gif earh animations files are also available as quicktime movies. The quicktime movies preserve photo-realistic colour, while the .gif animated versions of the same files are in less than 256 colours. Gif file formats do not retain full colour as well as the quicktime movies, but they are more universally supported than quicktime files. Gif can be played on mobile cell-phone screens and embedded in webpages as an animated graphic file. The animated gifs are generally made from the quicktime looping movie files of the rotating spinning earth.
Access to Heretic Press .gif animations and Quicktime movies is by a subscription through Paypal. Below each gif animation a payment link grants access to that animation. Most of these larger animations with many frames were made with vintage 3-D software Macromind 3-D™ that allowed you to mathematically define the orbits of objects on their own axis and around each other. Formulas were calculated for the orbit of planets from mercury to Saturn and its major moons. The path of the planets could not be shown in real time, Saturn would hardly move in its 50 year cycle around the sun compared to Mercury Venus or Earth. The orbits of the outer planets were speeded up and the inner planets slowed down. Each planet had its own rotation around itself and around the imaginary sun which would loop back to the starting position in 360, 480, 1,200 or 1,800 frames.
Texture maps were then made in Photoshop™ of the earth and planets with a flat mercator projection where the top and bottom edges were the same colour as were the left and right edges. Each texture map was wrapped around a planet at frame one. The rendering of frames took months of raytracing.
Even more tedious than rendering, In some movies, each frame has been saved and worked on individually with special effects like glowing edges. The preview animations are limited in the number of frames they contain. Thanks again to Heretic Press for excellent error free XHTML.
