Some quicktime movie animation files are also available as animated gif files. The quicktime movies preserve photo-realistic colour, while the gif animated versions of the same files are in less than 256 colours. Gif file formats do not retain colour well, but they are more universally supported than quicktime files. Gif can be played on mobile phone screens and embedded in webpages as an animated graphic file. The animated gifs are generally made from the quicktime solar movie files of the rotating spinning earth. The gifs come in three sizes, thumbnails, phone screen sizes, quarter screen and NTSC TV standard size 640 × 480 pixels.
Quicktime movies are 15 or 30 frames per second as specified, from small quarter screen sizes (320 × 240 pixels) up to 17 inch monitor sizes (1024 × 768 pixels).
