The ability to deal more effectively with conflict is something that can be learnt. It involves developing a range of valuable communication skills and interpersonal skills. It also means thinking about conflict, considering how conflict develops and assessing your own responses to conflict situations.
This online textbook takes the approach that conflict can have positive and creative outcomes when it is managed skillfully. The content is designed to build the reader's communication skills, to explore their attitudes to themselves and others and to increase their understanding of the nature of conflict.
It also introduces a range of strategies for dealing flexibly and creatively with conflict situations to ensure the best possible outcome. By taking a structured approach to conflict skills, attitudes, knowledge and strategies, it is hoped that readers will be able to take specific steps toward developing their capacity to deal with conflict and to see the practical changes that can result.
One combined assignment should be used to assess the three learning outcomes. The assignment should ideally focus on the participants own experience enabling them to provide concrete and practical detail and to apply skills and strategies in a real world situation. Where this is not possible, participants can work from a case study scenario.

These questions can be clearer if the dispute is put into a category according to the interests of the parties. Is each party asking for something based on their self interest, fairness, wants or needs? A resource to help frame the conflict.
