Displaying text onscreen and printing text, can be two entirely different things as far as a computer is concerned. Some bitmap fonts describe the pixels which make a typeface in a particular size and style on a computer monitor. Each size and style of a bitmapped font requires its own font file. Bitmapped fonts cannot be scaled up in size without a dramatic loss of quality and pixelation.

PostScript fonts are different in that each text character is described mathematically so that only one larger font file is needed. Increasing the font size of a postscript font will not degrade the text.

Some font characteristics include size and applied styling such as Italic, bold, or underline. Generally these font style tags are depreciated HTML elements which means you should try and avoid using them. See Cascading Style for the better alternative which is to apply a class to elements you want displayed in a certain font and style and specify this in your Cascading Style Sheet.

Fonts can be shown in many typefaces and sizes. Generally novels are usually set from 10pt to 12pt type. The typeface size has dramatic implications for the number of pages the manuscript will consume. Two main styles of typeface are serif and sans serif. Serif fonts have graphic elements which draw the letters together visually better than san serif fonts which are more often used for headings.

The W3C validator does not support the used embed tags, but they are required for the display of shockwave files by some browsers. Without the embed tag and by just using the correct W3C object tag, the page might only work in Internet Explorer. The embed and noembed tags and values for each tag, produce deliberate W3C validation errors, rather than be error free and deny access to Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Opera and others.
